CAN - ISO 11898 BUS-system for automotive diagnostic and flash applications The CAN bus was introduced to enable the networking of a large number of ECUs. As it allows considerably higher data rates than its predecessors (K-Line, J1708), it soon started being used for diagnostics and flash programming. ISO 11898-2:2016 specifies the high-speed physical media attachment (HS-PMA) of the controller area network (CAN), a serial communication protocol that supports distributed real-time control and multiplexing for use within road vehicles.

These standards may be purchased from the ISO. Bosch is still active in extending the CAN standards. ISO 11898-4 defined the CAN protocol and time-triggered CAN (TTCAN) while ISO 11898-2 defines the high-speed physical layer, and ISO 11898-3 defined the low-speed fault tolerant physical layer. Figure shows the relation of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) layers and its sublayers to 1 ISO 11898-1, this document as well as ISO 11898-3.

Controller area network is a serial communication protocol, which supports distributed real-time control and multiplexing for use within road vehicles and other control applications. In 1993, the International Organization for Standardization(ISO) released the CAN standard ISO 11898 which was later restructured into two parts; ISO 11898-1 which covers the data link layer, and ISO 11898-2 which covers the CAN physical layer for high-speed CAN. This first edition of ISO 11898-2, together with ISO 11898-1, replaces ISO 11898:1993, which has been technically revised. Whereas the replaced International Standard covered both the CAN DLL and the high-speed PL, ISO 11898-2 specifies the high-speed MAU, while ISO 11898-1 specifies the DLL, including LLC and MAC sublayers. Addi-tionally, toolmakers have launched bus analyzers, oscilloscopes, and other tools supporting ISO CAN FD. The ISO 11898-2 high-speed transceiver standard is also under review allow-ing bit-rates higher than ISO 11898-3 PDF - ISO , Road vehicles - Controller area network (CAN) - Part 3: Low- speed, fault-tolerant, medium-dependent interface on. ISO 11898-1:2003 and ISO 11898-2:2003 cancel and replace ISO 11898:1993. In addition to the high-speed CAN, the development of the low-speed CAN, which was originally covered by ISO 11519-2, gained new means such as fault tolerant behaviour. The subject of this part of ISO 11898 is the definition and description of requirements necessary to The second edition of ISO 11898-1, published in 2015, comprises the definitions of the Classical CAN protocol as standardized in ISO 11898-1:2003 and the CAN FD protocol, which specifies two bit-rates and payloads up to 64 byte. 2016, the second edition of ISO 11898-2 was published. In more technical terms, the controller area network is described by a data link layer and physical layer.
